Genesis 3
                              By John Coish

3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"

The serpent obviously had the opportunity to talk with Eve and was not disgusting to her as she was more then willing to talk with him.

2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.

I have always wondered how well Adam and Eve understood death since they had nothing to relate it to. It is safe to say in this expression that the serpent knew that the fruit would not kill her immediately. We have no idea if he fully knew what would happen to her when God found out. It is safe to say that he wanted to demonstrate to God that man could not be trusted. Why? Often we see this happening in workplaces to demonstrate that we are more worthy then the other guy.

Ezekiel 28:12-15 "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you. " Most people think of these verses as not only referring to the king of Tyre but liking him to Satan a description of great beauty that falls in pride. Imagine being a great spiritual being that is told to serve an inferior one that God is favouring over you. The angels are here to serve mankind and Satan as a great Angel obviously didn’t like his place in the order of things. He worked to change it by putting down mankind. He was careful how he did it so he wouldn’t outright lie; as if he could get away with deceiving.

Genesis 3"5 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

They obviously didn’t consider the serpent in a negative light and it seemed quite normal that he would be talking with them. The serpent was kind of correct in that they didn’t die at that moment.

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?"

Natural response when you know that you sinned is to try to hide it and avoid the punishment. It is truly impossible to avoid God though.

12 Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."

Immediately upon realizing you are found out you reach out for any excuse. In this case it wasn’t really my fault it was the woman you gave me. Not only does he blame the woman, he also blames God for given him such a woman. A more noble response is to accept responsibility for his own action rather than search for an excuse.

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

She responds in the same manner that neglects her part in it but tries to assign the blame to the serpent instead. The one we attempt to deceive the most is often ourselves instead of being honest about our faults.

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life.

God seems to agree with them for a moment and punishes the serpent by casting him down.

15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

He also lets the serpent know that their will always be enmity between him and the woman’s Seed. This Seed shall ultimately bruise the serpent’s head which is a serious injury and the serpent on the other hand will only cause the Seed to fall or stumble. This is a reference to the fact that Christ will fall by Satan but ultimately Christ will cause Satan’s a fatal fall. Some ask why you would call this serpent Satan. In the Revelation of Jesus He states, "He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan" in Revelation 20:2 and again makes the same reference in Revelation 12:9 when He again casts Satan down – obviously this is a later casting down of Satan as he was the accuser of the brethren which requires there were people to be accused. This falling of Satan is the first recorded fall for Satan but is followed by a number of others as God releases him at various times to test mankind.

16 To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you."

The woman didn’t get a free ride but was held accountable for her sin, the breaking of God’s command. One of the penalties is that child bearing will be painful. The other comment lets her know that her role is to support the man and follow him, not rule over Him or ignore him. Just as the order of the creation of man and woman applies to Jesus and the Church in that Jesus is to be pre-eminent, the comment here is also that the concept of marriage is to represent Jesus and the Church – our desire should be for Jesus and He should rule over us. This would mean the church would be disciples instead of the radical liberal movement where they tell Jesus what words He said are okay and what ones they will just disregard.

17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field.19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return."

They had it all. They had a beautiful home, everlasting life, perfect weather and they could eat when they felt like it without working. Now they were going to experience hard work to get food to survive and ultimately he was going to die.

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.21 Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

God taught them how to do this and while people generally say God gave them the green herbs to eat the principles God uses later which encourages man to make use of the animals they kill would lead one to believe they ate the meat.

22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"; 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

The penalty for the sin was ultimately death. The penalty was assured the day they sinned. I don’t know about you but the first question I would ask is, "God how may I receive your favour and enter into your Garden again?" I am sure they asked that question and the answer comes to that question along the way.

The answer is actually shown a little piece here and a little piece there right from the beginning of creation. Jesus was going to be the redeeming sacrifice, the Seed, that will fall to atone for mankind and ultimately put away Satan, death and sin from us.

This passage is often called the fall of man but it is equally representative of the fall of Satan when he begins his journey as the king of the children of pride. Man on the other hand now knows what to do and is given a choice to follow God or Satan. It doesn’t take long to see pride raise its ugly face again.
