6:1 And it came to pass, when
men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and
daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw
the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them
wives of all which they chose. Some make reference to
the "sons of God" as if they are angels. We are told later
in that the angels don’t marry. However, we do have the
reference of Genesis 4 where you see Cain’s genealogy and at
the end of Chapter 4 where Seth’s seed calls on the name of
the Lord, so it is likely that the ones who were calling on
the name of the Lord were giving into their sexual lusts and
beginning to have many woman. This no doubt caused much
violence as jealousy and envy are bred in this environment.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive
with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be
an hundred and twenty years.
How did God change the life span of mankind? Some muse it
was a change in the atmosphere after the flood. They have
some rationale for that in the occurrence of rainbows later
but there are problems with that being the sole reason due
to the genealogies that will be discussed later. The truth
is we don’t know how He did it but we do know that life
spans were shortened.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also
after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters
of men, and they bare children to them, the same became
mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
There are human remains that make Shaquille O’Neal seem
like a little man. Like Goliath these guys would become
quite famous and quite powerful. The remains also
demonstrate that they were fully human.
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the
earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his
heart was only evil continually.
When one begins to give in to one’s lusts it is amazing
how addictive and controlling they are on your mind. If you
want help in overcoming your addictions please contact a
minister at 903-939-2929. While he can explain the biblical
principles, God’s mercy and ability for God to help you
overcome your trials, with God ALL things are possible, he
may also encourage you to seek other peer or subject expert
help along the way.
6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the
earth, and it grieved him at his heart.7 And the LORD said,
I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the
earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the
fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
The expression here is meant that there will be no life
left anywhere on the land (the water creatures are not
mentioned here). It doesn’t say within your line of sight
but leaves a clear impression that all land habitat will be
destroyed but with one exception that God begins to mention.
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.9 These
are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect
in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
A simple acknowledgement of why Noah and through him, his
family, received mercy is because Noah truly sought to be
with God and do good even in the midst of a sin sick world.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth
was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was
corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come
before me; for the earth is filled with violence through
them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
It is interesting to note that when sexual immorality is
allowed to flourish it is immediately followed by violence
and corruption.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make
in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with
pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it
of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the
breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty
cubits.16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a
cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark
shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and
third stories shalt thou make it.
Make a boat that is longer than a US football field and
three stories high to house all the animals and Noah’s
family. Would this boat be big enough? Yes, God is a good
structural engineer. Would it be easy for Noah to build? No
It would take many years to complete this project. Unlike
most illustrated pictures of the ark it wasn’t a small boat
with large animal heads sticking out, it was a very large
ship with small animals inside.
17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters
upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath
of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the
earth shall die.
God repeats that all flesh under heaven and in the earth
will die. The repetition is used to make a point. It would
be an odd rendering to say God only meant some of the people
and only over that one area of the earth but some do just
that.
18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou
shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife,
and thy sons' wives with thee. 19 And of every living thing
of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the
ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and
female. 20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after
their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his
kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them
alive. 21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten,
and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food
for thee, and for them.
How could Noah get all those animals in the boat and feed
them for a year? Firstly, the animals were to replenish the
earth later so they would be small immature ones ready to be
fruitful later. Secondly, it was representative of each kind
not every specie. Thirdly, God was supplying the water along
the way. Whatever system Noah had for delivering the food
and removing the refuse would have been fascinating to see
but it is possible for this to occur.
22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded
him, so did he.
Noah is described as a perfect disciple or student. God
says so and he does it. Many people in his day probably
scoffed at Noah and his family for making a boat for a flood
no one believed would occur. Yet he is simply described as
doing what God said. Man didn’t seem to concern him.
Nowadays the skeptics scoff at the concept of a worldwide
flood. The boat wouldn’t be big enough or where did the
water come from and where did it go. Then the same people
listen to a science guy say that the canyons on Mars were
probably carved by water millions of years ago and they say
tell me more. Fascinating when there is zero proof of water
on Mars and 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water.
Which is more likely to have occurred? Is there skepticism
based on their belief system or on tangible scientific
observations? It is this belief system that eliminates
thoughtful and serious consideration of the flood and
nothing more than that. God says where the water came from
later on and I will attempt to demonstrate with pictures a
theory as to how it all happened in the next chapter.
There are skeptics within the Bible community that also
scoff at a worldwide flood. Some do it to protect the theory
of long age with regards to historical records of the earth
and not wanting to contribute any of it to a catastrophic
flood. Some do it because pagan sources describe the world
as the fertile valley region so they like to consider these
passages as local floods and a local creation account in
Genesis 1.
Wouldn’t it seem more reasonable, considering how pagan
religions have picked up parts of Christianity after the
fact and corruptly added them to their religions, to
recognize that the same practice has been used many times
before? We should recognize that the Bible is the
unchangeable Word of God and the pagan sources have
corrupted it so we base our interpretation on the Bible
first rather then understand the pagan sources and then work
it back into the Bible? Likewise things like the Hoppi
Indian and other cultural references to the flood support
the Biblical perspective as accurate. We don’t put on the
viewpoint of the Hoppi Indians to understand the flood
better. We read the Word of God to understand the flood and
these ancillary references support the Word of God’s
accuracy.
To do this process backwards is corrupting to the Word of
God.
Note:
The Genealogies of Chapter 5 will be discussed together
later on with Genesis 10 and 11.
