Most people who believe in the Holy Bible would agree that we are living in the time of the end spoken of by the prophets of God, the apostles, and Jesus Christ.
Rightly or wrongly, no one cany deny we are living at a time of unprecedented events, given the nature of ongoing conflicts among nations, religious confusion, economic disruption, outbreaks of dangerous viruses, and an ongoing pandemic. The effects these events have been having on the global scene should not go unnoticed.
The church that Jesus founded on the Day of Pentecost, nearly two thousand years ago, has been given the directive to preach the good news of hope to an entire world engulfed in hopelessness. The church’s role is to preach a warning message and to prepare the bride for the bridegroom. Jesus Christ will marry the church at his coming.
Rev. 19:7, “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. 9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”
The church has also been told to, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.” (Matt. 24: 42-46).
It’s quite clear what is expected of the church in these troubled times. The salient question as we approach the birthday of the church on the Day of Pentecost (June 5), is whether the church has been doing its work; has it been fulfilling the commission of Matt. 28 and Acts 2? Is the Church of God ready to meet its founder?
Jesus also addressed this question to the saints: “when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Matt. 18:8).
Is the Church of God at a crossroads when it comes to fulfilling its God given role? It’s a question we all need to meditate on and try to answer from our own perspective. The answer lies in what we, as individuals, and the body of people as a collective, the church, have been doing to ensure that the church fulfills its role. Remember, we will all have to answer to God for the gifts He has given to us for the edification of the body and to bring glory to His name.
