What is Intercessory Prayer?

For many years, I attended with a church tradition that taught us to pray “like Jesus told us“… (alone in our closet!)

Mat 6:5-6 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

At some point, the church understood to pray together – Group prayer – called “Intercessory Prayer“, where the congregation together prays for to God to intercede for the needs of the membership of the church — and the needs of our city, country, & world!  Together, we are often asking… God to suspend the NORMAL rules of nature, and to grant a MIRACLE.  Jesus provides us a model in John 17, where he prays in the midst of His disciples, just hours before his suffering and death.

Joh 17:15 … keep them from the evil one
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth…

We understand prayer is NOT about God being a “magic genie” granting everybody’s wishes.  It is about His children knowing God CAN do ALL things … and asking Him to intervene in our lives (if appropriate).  Sometimes He does answer “yes” with a miracle… and sometimes He might answer “No” or Not yet”…

Sometimes atheists will seek to belittle God, by designing a test to show that “prayer doesn’t work” during their “double blind” scientific experiment.  That’s not how God works, or how Prayer works!?!
