As a teen, I encountered some scriptures that led me to think sleep was “evil” …
The verses are in Proverbs – the book with Wisdom for young people!
Proverbs 6:9 How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?
Proverbs 19:15 Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, And an idle person will suffer hunger.
Proverbs 24:33-34 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.
Proverbs 19:15 Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, And an idle person will suffer hunger.
Proverbs 20:13 Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.
As I have grown older, I came across articles explaining the BENEFITS of sleep include:
- Healthier circulatory and immune systems
- Better management of blood sugar and weight
- Improved memory, alertness, and problem-solving capabilities
- Greater repair of cells
- Lower stress
- Greater balance
Upon a “second look”, I have come to realize Scripture was NOT condemning SLEEP – it was warning about the human tendency to be lazy!
So… This provided a good opportunity to see the possibility that we can jump to wrong conclusions! We need not be afraid to review our learning — because Truth is Truth & it will withstand our scrutiny!
Today … I am happy to explore “other scriptures” that speak positively about sleep! and to learn the lessons about avoiding laziness. We need to be sure to benefit from getting proper sleep!
Proverbs 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Ecclesiastes 5:12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, Whether he eats little or much…
In Church of God history, we have a booklet with “simple wisdom” titled The Seven Laws of Radiant Health … and “Law # 5” deals with Sleep & rest.
Do you know what other things you can be doing for your good health?
