Why the Church?

It has been nearly 2000 years since Jesus uttered the words:
Mat_16:18 … I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

The Church continues to survive today… however, according to Global News… “Religiosity in Canada is at an all-time low, with recently released data from Statistics Canada showing only 68% of Canadians 15 or older now report having a religious affiliation. It’s the first time that number has dipped below 70% since StatCan began tracking the data in 1985”

Perhaps another way to evaluate Christian zeal is to note that just 23% of Canadians say they attend church “group activities” at least once a month.  Why people are leaving the Church? — is a question for another day … Today I would like to focus on Why people should attend the Church that Jesus built.

One Church of God minister answers the question saying…
The role of the church & its people is:
1) to bear witness of Jesus Christ &
2) to care for one another
It’s that simple.

Bearing witness for Jesus Christ  involves … proclaiming the Gospel & living a life that shines as a light in a darkened world.  It involves being ready to give an answer of the hope that is within you with meekness & with fear.  It involves a love for other people; a willingness to share what you have with them.  It involves a support for those who are actually on the front line doing the witnessing.

Caring for one another involves … visiting the widows and fatherless in their affliction.  It involves vigilance to see that church members who are downhearted are not left alone.  It involves seeing to it that the hungry are fed & that fatherless children are taught & cared for.

These are the duties of the church.  This is the role the church plays in the salvation of us all.
